The Renaissance:
Gilded Centaur & Baby Satyr

April 2011
Junk Toys, Plaster, Acrylic Paint
centaur (5" h); satyr (2" h)

These two statuettes were created from cheap
plastics toys (a horse, a Halloween skeleton, and a
miniature doll) found at surplus store. I dismantled
them and reconstructed them into the forms of a
centaur and a satyr. They reference not only Greek
mythology, but also the references made to Greek
mythology during the Renaissance, i.e., through
appropriation, as the simulacra of lost ideas.
